The first track debuted from this sprawling collection is also the album’s longest: the 11-minute “Human Sadness,” where it often sounds as if another band is bleeding through a tape not fully erased. The album’s second single, “Where No Eagles Fly,” takes a more direct approach, with a muscular bass track guiding a hard rock tune that’s so tightly compressed and jammed with distorted instruments and vocals that it creates its own value system. Julian Casablancas isn’t looking for mainstream acceptance; he’s aiming to record an underground classic in the tradition of Sonic Youth, Royal Trux, F****ed Up, and other groups who’ve foregone accessibility for the pure beauty of experimental rock and beyond.
